Three-Minute Drive

It’s only a three-minute drive,
so you get in the car knowing
you’re coming right back--

but the rain has finally broken
the oppressive heat
and the breeze is a balm for your nerves

as you drive with windows down,
and the music edges through
the static in your mind.

Your destination is right in front of you,
but you turn the wheel--
there’s another one four miles east
