Mourning Cup

Poetry Jul 3, 2026

by Leah Maitland

across the span of continents, I fail correct measurements yet again
a spray of condolences washing my mouth out in bermuda
attempts to triangulate within the weight of loss
verbiage that grief grinds down into dust.
between the veins of us I find filtered
message bottle remnants, damp
as the touching palms and
prayers poured from
a sinner’s throat.
it drips flowing-tear beads in the bloomed eulogy of I love you.
you may sip that, chalice-sweet, my notes of lethe and violet.
